Walk into a crystal shop for the first time and the honest reaction is usually the same: there are hundreds of them, they are all beautiful, and you have no idea which one is meant for you. So here is the short answer before the long one. Start with what you actually want to feel different, pick one stone associated with it, and live with that stone for a month before you buy another.
That is the whole method. Everything below is just working out which one.
Choose by intention, not by name
Most beginners start by learning crystal names, which is the slow way round. Names come later, on their own, because you end up handling the stones. What is far more useful at the start is to finish this sentence: I would like a bit more ... in my life.
Calm. Protection. Focus. Sleep. Confidence to say the thing you keep not saying. Whatever comes out of your mouth first is usually the honest answer, and it is the one to shop for.
That is why our crystals are sorted by intention rather than only by type. Each collection below gathers everything in the shop associated with that purpose, from tumbles at a few pounds up to statement pieces.
The ten starting points
Calm and stress relief
The most common reason people buy a first crystal, by a wide margin. Amethyst is the traditional choice: it is the stone people reach for when the day will not switch off. Blue lace agate and lepidolite do similar work more softly.
A palm stone is a genuinely good format here, because the point is to hold it. A worry stone is designed to be rubbed with a thumb while you think, and that small physical habit does a lot of the work.

Protection
Black tourmaline is the workhorse of protective stones, followed by obsidian, smoky quartz and hematite. Dark stones, generally, and heavy in the hand. People often keep one by the front door or in a bag rather than on display.
If you would rather wear it than shelve it, a black tourmaline wand necklace keeps the stone on you all day. Our Protection collection is the biggest of the intention collections, which tells you something about what people are after.
Grounding
Different from protection, though they overlap. Grounding stones are for when you feel scattered, floaty or three steps ahead of yourself. Red jasper, hematite and smoky quartz are the usual suspects, and the heavier the piece the better it tends to work.

Abundance and money
Citrine is the classic, and it is worth knowing that most bright orange citrine on the market is heat treated amethyst. Natural citrine is a paler, smokier yellow. Both are sold honestly as citrine across the trade, so buy the one you like the look of and do not let anyone tell you the pale one is inferior. Pyrite and green aventurine are the other two to know.

Love and self love
Rose quartz is the obvious answer and it is obvious for a reason. Rhodonite and rhodochrosite are the two to graduate to. The distinction people find useful: rose quartz for softening how you speak to yourself, rhodonite for actually repairing something.
Focus and study
Fluorite is the desk stone. Sodalite and clear quartz are the alternatives, and clear quartz has the advantage of being useful for absolutely everything, which is why it turns up in every list ever written.
A clear quartz pendulum is a nice way in if you are curious about working with a stone rather than just owning one.

Sleep
Amethyst again, howlite, and moonstone. The practical advice matters more than the mineral here: keep it on the bedside table, not under the pillow, where you will lose it or wake up on it.
See Sleep.
Healing and recovery
Meant in the everyday sense: getting over something, getting back on your feet. Clear quartz, green aventurine and amethyst are the traditional trio. A 500g bag of raw amethyst is good value if you want pieces to keep in several rooms, or to give away.

Manifestation
Clear quartz and citrine, plus whichever stone matches the specific thing you are working towards. This is the intention where the format matters most: points and towers are traditionally used to direct intention, which is why they end up on so many altars.
See Manifestation and Points, Towers and Obelisks.
Spiritual growth and intuition
Labradorite is the one people fall hardest for, because of the flash. Amethyst, lapis lazuli and moonstone round it out. This is where most people end up eventually, whatever they started with.

The three stone starter set
If you would rather not choose at all, this is the set almost every experienced collector recommends, and it costs very little:
- Clear quartz, because it is the all purpose one and it amplifies whatever it sits next to.
- Amethyst, for calm and sleep, which is what most people want most of the time.
- Black tourmaline or smoky quartz, for grounding and protection, and because a dark heavy stone balances the other two.
Three stones, one of each job. Add a fourth only when you can say precisely why.
How to pick the actual piece
Once you know the type, you still have to choose between twenty of them. A few things that genuinely help:
- Pick it up if you can. Weight and temperature matter more than photographs suggest.
- Do not chase perfection. Inclusions, veils and rough patches are the stone's history. A flawless piece is often a manufactured one.
- Buy the size you will actually use. A tumble in your pocket beats a tower you never look at.
- Trust the one you keep coming back to. If you have scrolled past the same stone four times, that is your answer.
Formats worth knowing: spheres and palm stones for holding, bracelets for wearing, pendulums for working with, and points and towers for the shelf.
What to do when it arrives
Cleanse it first. It takes a few minutes and it is the proper way to begin with a new stone. We have written a full guide to that: how to cleanse and charge your crystals, including the stones you must never put in water.
Then charge it with one clear intention, and put it somewhere you will see it every day. A crystal in a drawer is a pebble.
Common questions
Does the crystal choose me, or do I choose it?
People say the former and mean something real by it: you are drawn to a colour or a shape for reasons you cannot articulate. Either way you end up with a stone you like, which is the point.
How much should a first crystal cost?
Under a fiver is perfectly normal for a good tumble. Do not let anyone talk you into a large purchase on your first visit.
Can I have too many crystals?
You can have more than you have any relationship with, which is a different problem and a very common one. One stone you use beats thirty in a bowl.
Do crystals need to match my star sign?
Only if you want them to. Zodiac associations are a nice organising idea rather than a rule, and plenty of people ignore them entirely.

Have a browse through Crystals and Stones, or go straight to whichever intention you thought of first. Ours are chosen by hand rather than ordered by the pallet, and many are one of a kind, so the piece in the photograph is the exact piece that will arrive at your door.
Crystals are for wellbeing and enjoyment. Nothing here is medical advice, and no crystal is a substitute for seeing your GP.
