Two hand-carved wooden bees rendered at rest, the polished curves of their bodies catching light against the rough parasite wood beneath them. The carving is worked from a single piece, with the soft striping of the bodies, the suggestion of folded wings, and the gentle settle of small creatures held still in the grain.

The base is raw parasite wood — known as jempinis or jempinis batu in Indonesia — which comes from trees that have been overgrown by parasitic vines, and the resulting timber carries the distinctive twisting grain, hollowed sections, and organic textures of that growth process. Because each base is shaped by the wood's own history, no two pieces are alike. The carving you see in the photograph is the carving you receive.

Bees carry layered cultural meaning. In ancient Greek tradition the Melissae were priestesses of Demeter; in Egyptian iconography the bee was a royal symbol; in folk craft across Europe and beyond they have stood for industriousness, community, and the sweet rewards of patient work. In contemporary terms, bees have become symbols of ecological care — beloved, threatened, and increasingly precious.

A piece like this lands particularly well with gardeners, beekeepers, environmentalists, and anyone drawn to the small, careful creatures that quietly keep the world functioning. It works as a windowsill ornament, a desk piece, a shelf detail, or as a thoughtful gift — particularly for someone who'd appreciate the meaning rather than just the form.

Hand-carved by Indonesian artisans. Small in scale, big in character. Small variations in finish, grain, and base form are part of what you receive.
